ADA TOWNSHIP -- The woman credited with fine-tuning Amway's global image is garnering the spotlight herself.
Candace Matthews is Black Enterprise's Corporate Executive of the Year.
Amway Corp.'s global marketing chief officer is featured on the September cover of the business magazine -- which hits newsstands today -- holding a globe.
Matthews, 50, is the first private company executive to receive the honor.
In her two years with the family-owned, multilevel marketing giant, she is credited with updating the Ada Township-based company's brand, sales force and global message.
"Through her business prowess and inventiveness, she is helping turn Amway into an even more dynamic global powerhouse," wrote the magazine in explaining why Matthews was selected for the award.
In the six-page spread, Matthews acknowledges it took some coaxing by a headhunter to convince her to consider leaving her previous position as president of Soft Sheen-Carson, a consumer products division of the cosmetics giant L'Oreal USA.
Her resume also included top marketing positions at Procter & Gamble and the Coca Cola Co.
"Would (the role) be bigger than what I'm doing now?" she wondered at the time.
Matthews found a good fit for her skills with Amway, which operates in 50 countries and employs 13,000 staffers.
She is credited with helping to boost the company's revenues by 15 percent to $8.2 billion in 2008, the magazine reports. She oversees a global staff of about 600 employees, a budget in the hundreds of millions and has use of a corporate jet.
