Taipei, Feb. 9 (CNA) More than 17,000 Chinese members of the global direct sales company Amway will arrive in Taichung in March and April for a major conference - providing the central Taiwanese city a chance to earn tourist revenue, officials said Monday.
Anna Wang, director of the city government's Industrial Development and Investment Promotion Committee, confirmed that more than 17,000 sales representatives and other members of Chinese Amway (China) Co., Limited are slated to visit Taiwan from mid-March in eight groups.
Taichung City edged out other cities, including those in Japan, Singapore and South Korea, to host the large number of Chinese visitors, thanks to its large conference centers and outdoor squares, Wang said.
Taichung City Mayor Jason Hu on Monday expressed hope that the city's success in winning this opportunity to host such a high number of visitors would help inject greater momentum into Taichung's local economy.
Wang said the precedent is set to mark a major breakthrough that could help the city win the chance to host similar large-scale conferences and incentive tours in the future.
Three other Chinese companies have shown a high degree of interest in organizing overseas conferences and travel for their workers in Taiwan, Wang added.
For the upcoming event, all walks of life in Taichung City will launch full preparations to seize handsome business opportunities expected to be worth more than NT$ 100 million that would arise from the Chinese visitors, Wang said.
The Amway (China) employees will arrive from Shanghai in eight groups on board cruise ships and will first make a stop at Keelung Harbor in northern Taiwan and then proceed to Haulien Harbor in eastern Taiwan before finally reaching Taichung Harbor in central Taiwan.
The first batch of the Chinese visitors is slated to visit Taichung on March 18, with subsequent groups to arrive on March 22, March 28, April 3, April 9 and April 17 and later dates.
