Amway China has been named as one of thirteen finalists selected for the US Secretary of State’s prestigious 2011 Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE). These U.S. companies were chosen from 62 nominations submitted by American Ambassadors around the world. ACE finalists are international business leaders who recognize the vital role that U.S. businesses play abroad as good corporate citizens.
Amway was chosen for the company’s contribution to the overall growth and development of the local economy in China by building up the business acumen and human capital of independent distributors; fostering entrepreneurship; recruiting locally, investing in building its workforce abilities, promoting its management staff from within; and fostering an environment of volunteerism.
The other finalists are ANOVA Food LLC (Indonesia), Archer Daniels Midland Company (Paraguay), Cargill (India), General Motors (Uzbekistan), Grenada Chocolate Company (Grenada), Intel (Vietnam), Johnson & Johnson (Russia), Joy Global (South Africa), Proctor & Gamble (Nigeria), Proctor & Gamble (Pakistan), Sahlman Seafoods (Nicaragua), and Tiger Machinary (Russia).
Companies are nominated by Chiefs of Mission worldwide and the winners are chosen by the Principals' Award Selection Committee. The Committee, chaired by the Under Secretary for Economic, Energy, and Agricultural Affairs, includes a representative of the Secretary, the Under Secretary for Global Affairs, the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, and various Assistant Secretaries. It also includes senior officials from the U.S. Agency for International Development, Overseas Private Investment Corporation, MCC, and Department of Commerce.
The Secretary of State has awarded the ACE since 1999 to recognize American companies who are leaders in socially responsible activities and contribute to the overall growth and development of the local economy in which they work. The 2011 ACE winners will be announced at the annual ceremony hosted by the Secretary of State later this fall.
Past winners include both multinational and small-to-medium size enterprises. Historically, the Selection Committee, which meets during the summer months, has recognized two to three winners based on a thorough discussion and evaluation of the nominations submitted
