BEIJING, October 11, 2008. Direct-selling company Amway Corporation announced on Saturday in Beijing that it had created an environmental protection foundation.
The merchandiser of health and beauty products also released its first global report on corporate social responsibility at the press conference.
As of the end of June 2008, Amway had donated a total of 2,500 million yuan (US$365.79 million) to 4,100 global projects that focus on children and environmental protection, the report said. The company also donated 37 million yuan to help victims of the 8-magnitude earthquake that jolted southwestern China in May.
Amway has 156 volunteer teams throughout China. About 45,000 company salespeople and other employees provide community services, including teaching poor children, cleaning up litter from mountains and rivers, and assisting those in need after natural disasters. More than 380 Amway employees served as volunteers for the Beijing Olympics.
Zhou Jian, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, gave Amway an award at the conference for its contributions to various communities in China.
"We want to be a good business," said Doug DeVos, President of Amway's parent company Alticor Inc. "We want to operate honorably, but we know that being a good business is only the first step. We also want to be a good neighbor, an active partner of and participant in the community."
